Komodo National Park sits on the strait between the Flores and Sumba seas, and the water that pushes through it is what makes the diving what it is. Cold, nutrient-heavy upwellings feed the seamounts in the north and the soft-coral gardens in the south, which is why a park this compact can hold both a schooling-fish spectacle like Castle Rock and a manta cleaning station like Karang Makassar within a morning's steam of each other.
That same current is why the region rewards a private dive charter more than almost anywhere else in Indonesia. The premier northern sites only fish properly around slack water, and slack moves every day. When you charter the whole vessel, your captain and divemaster plan the day around the tide table rather than around a fixed timetable that has to suit twenty strangers.

Certified divemaster or instructor aboard
A certified divemaster or instructor can be placed aboard as part of the charter, so the guiding is yours alone rather than shared with strangers.

Signature dive sites
Komodo's dive sites split cleanly into a northern group, swept and pelagic-heavy, and a southern group, colder and richer in macro life and soft coral. A three-night charter typically covers the north; five nights and upward lets you reach the south properly.

The Cauldron (Shotgun)

Makassar Reef (Manta Point)
IntermediateA wide rubble flat where reef mantas feed and get cleaned year-round. Shallow, easy and often the highlight of the week for divers and snorkellers alike.
Siaba Besar
All levelsA sheltered bay with a sandy slope, resident green turtles and a garden-eel field. The standard checkout dive and a reliable night dive.
Mawan
All levelsA gentle sloping reef beside a white-sand beach, with a manta cleaning station on the ridge. Calm enough to run alongside a beach afternoon for non-divers.

Manta Alley
IntermediateA channel between rocks off Nusa Kode where reef mantas queue up at cleaning stations. Cooler water and surge, but the encounters are close and often prolonged.
When to dive Komodo
Komodo is divable year-round — the question is which half of the park you point the yacht at. The north is at its best from April to November, the south comes into its own from December to February, and the mantas are essentially a constant.

- Manta rays are seen at Karang Makassar and Manta Alley throughout the year — there is no closed season for them.
- Southern itineraries need a 5mm wetsuit; water there can sit at 20–24°C while the north is still 26–29°C.
- Komodo dragons, Padar and Pink Beach are available all year and slot around the dive plan rather than replacing it.
- July and August are the tightest for availability. Serious dive groups usually secure a vessel six to nine months out.

Conditions, currents and certification
Komodo's premier northern sites — Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, Batu Bolong, Golden Passage and The Cauldron — are advanced-level dives. Current is the attraction and the hazard in equal measure: it is what stacks the fish up, and it is what will move a diver off a pinnacle in seconds if buoyancy is loose.
A reef hook is standard kit in the north, and good trim matters more than logged dive count. Divers who are comfortable with negative entries, drift ascents and holding position in moving water get the most out of the park.
Water temperature runs roughly 26–29°C in the north. In the south it drops to 20–24°C because of upwelling, so a 5mm suit — sometimes with a hood — is the right call on any itinerary that goes below Rinca.
- Newly certified divers are welcome: your divemaster builds the week from Siaba Besar, Mawan and Tatawa Besar upward.
- Mixed-certification groups are normal on a private charter — the dive plan splits rather than levelling down.
- Nitrox is available on selected vessels and is worth requesting for repetitive multi-level days in the north.
Why a private dive charter beats a shared schedule in Komodo
Komodo diving is a timing problem. Castle Rock fishes on one tide and is a grey, empty rock on another. On a shared departure, the site order is set before you board and has to work for everyone aboard. On a private charter, the captain reads the tide table each evening and moves the plan.
It also changes the shape of the day. Four dives, including a night dive, is a normal request on a private charter. So is skipping the afternoon dive because the light on Padar is too good to miss.
- Dive each site when the current is right, not when a group timetable says so.
- Up to four dives a day, including night dives, if your group wants them.
- Non-divers aboard get the dragons, Padar and Pink Beach without compromising the dive plan.

What a private Komodo dive charter costs
Private whole-vessel dive charters in Komodo start from USD 10,000, with a three-night minimum. That figure is for the entire yacht and crew, not per person — a group of six and a group of two pay the same for the same vessel.
Where the number moves is vessel class, season and length. Entry-level phinisi sit near the bottom of the range; premium and luxury vessels with larger dive decks, better tenders and nitrox capability sit well above it. July and August carry peak-season rates.
Diving itself is normally quoted as a dive package alongside the charter, and Komodo National Park entrance fees are paid locally. We set both out in writing before you commit — direct owner pricing, no broker fees.
