If Raja Ampat is Indonesia's marine crown, Triton Bay is its hidden jewel. Located on the south coast of West Papua's Bird's Head Peninsula, Triton Bay offers a diving experience that's fundamentally different from anywhere else in Indonesia — and possibly the world.
What Makes Triton Bay Special?
- Guaranteed Whale Sharks: Whale sharks gather around bagans (traditional fishing platforms) that attract baitfish. This is one of the most reliable whale shark encounters anywhere — not seasonal, but year-round.
- Soft Coral Wonderland: Nutrient-rich waters support extraordinary soft coral growth. The green-tinted water may lack the blue clarity of Raja Ampat, but it creates an otherworldly underwater landscape.
- Endemic Species: The Triton Bay epaulette shark and several undescribed species are found nowhere else on Earth.
- Zero Crowds: Fewer than 500 divers visit Triton Bay per year. Your yacht will be the only vessel at most dive sites.
Top Dive Sites
- Bagan Whale Sharks: Snorkel alongside gentle whale sharks attracted to fishing platform lights. An unforgettable encounter available to snorkelers and divers alike.
- Flasher Beach: Named for the endemic Triton Bay flasher wrasse. Vibrant soft corals and macro photography paradise.
- Sawandarek Jetty: A shallow muck dive under an old jetty teeming with nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, and octopus.
- The Waterfall: A freshwater waterfall cascading into the ocean creates a unique halocline effect while diving. Surreal.
How to Get There
Triton Bay is accessible via Kaimana airport (KNG) with flights from Ambon or Jayapura. Most expedition yacht charters combine Triton Bay with Misool or Raja Ampat:
- Raja Ampat → Triton Bay (10–14 nights): South through Misool, then continue to Triton Bay along the Papuan coast.
- Banda Sea → Triton Bay (14+ nights): An epic expedition from Ambon through the Banda Islands to Triton Bay and onwards to Raja Ampat.
- Kaimana-based (5–7 nights): Fly into Kaimana, explore Triton Bay intensively, fly out.
Best Time to Visit
Triton Bay is diveable year-round thanks to its sheltered geography. The calmest conditions are October–May. Whale sharks are present throughout the year. Water temperature is a consistent 28–30°C.
