Komodo yacht charter in January
Green hills and peak rainy season: a quieter, more weather dependent Komodo
Quick answer
Is January a good time for a yacht charter in Komodo?
January is a fair but not ideal month for a Komodo yacht charter. It is the heart of the rainy season, with frequent showers, humid heat and northwest winds that can pause some crossings at short notice. In return you get green hills, plankton rich water that draws mantas and very few boats. Choose a shorter, flexible route around the central islands.

Why go in January
What January does best in Komodo
- Padar and Rinca at their greenest after weeks of rain
- Plankton rich water that often brings more manta rays to central and southern sites
- Very few boats at the Padar viewpoint and Pink Beach
- Dramatic storm light and sunsets for photography
- Low season pricing on yachts that stay based in Labuan Bajo
Honest caveats
What to plan around
- The harbour master (KSOP) can suspend sailings to Komodo and Padar when BMKG forecasts high waves, sometimes for several days
- Visibility for snorkelling and diving is lower than in the dry season
- Many of the larger yachts are positioned in Raja Ampat, so choice is narrower
- The first days of January are still part of the busy New Year holiday
Wildlife
Dragons are less active in the heat of the day but are seen on Rinca and Komodo year round. Mantas are frequently encountered at Karang Makassar and, in calmer spells, at southern sites such as Manta Alley.
Demand and booking
After the New Year week, demand drops sharply. Short notice bookings are often possible and some yachts offer low season rates, though fewer larger yachts are in the area.
Fleet in January
Most of the larger luxury fleet is in Raja Ampat from around November to April, so January in Komodo relies on the yachts that stay based in Labuan Bajo.
Holidays and events
New Year (1 January) keeps Labuan Bajo busy in the first days of the month. Chinese New Year falls on 6 February in 2027, so some Asian holiday travel starts in late January.

FAQ
Komodo in January: your questions
Do boats still sail in Komodo in January?
Yes, yachts operate in January, but the port authority in Labuan Bajo issues sailing permits based on BMKG wave forecasts. On high wave days, trips to outer islands such as Komodo and Padar can be paused, while sheltered routes may still run. A good charter team watches the forecasts daily and adjusts the route.
Is January good for seeing manta rays in Komodo?
January can be one of the better months for mantas, because rain and runoff boost plankton. Karang Makassar in the central park is the usual site, and southern sites can be productive in calm spells. Visibility is lower than in mid year, so encounters often feel closer and more surprising.
Will Padar be green in January?
Yes. After several weeks of rain, the hills of Padar and Rinca turn green, a striking contrast to the golden grass seen from July onwards. The famous viewpoint hike is slippery after rain, so go at sunrise on a dry morning and wear shoes with good grip.
