Seasickness on Indonesian Yacht Charters: What to Expect

Updated 29 October 2026 · Navélia Yacht Charters Indonesia

Short answer

Most guests on Indonesian yacht charters never feel seasick, because the boats spend nights at sheltered anchorages and cruise mostly between islands rather than on open ocean. The main risk is short crossings in open water, which captains time for calm periods. Sailing in season, April to November for Komodo and October to April for Raja Ampat, and choosing a larger yacht reduce the motion further.

How rough is it really?

Komodo and Raja Ampat are archipelagos, so you are usually cruising in the lee of an island. Raja Ampat in season is known for very calm water among its islands. Komodo has strong tidal currents and a few open channels, which can create short choppy patches, but most transits last one to three hours and are often done early in the morning or while you sleep at anchor.

Phinisi yachts are broad and heavy wooden boats, which helps them feel steady at anchor. Sails are often raised for photos and short passages, but most cruising is done under engine at a comfortable speed.

Does the size of the yacht matter?

Yes. Longer and heavier yachts move more slowly in a swell. If anyone in your group is sensitive, consider a larger yacht with cabins in the middle of the hull.

How to prepare

Children are often less affected than adults, but plan for them too: keep them on deck in the shade during crossings and give them water and simple snacks.

  • Bring your preferred motion sickness remedy and take it before a crossing, not after you feel ill
  • Tell us when you book, so the captain can plan shorter legs and request a midship cabin
  • During transits, stay on deck, look at the horizon and avoid reading
  • Eat light, drink water and limit alcohol on crossing days
  • Choose 5 nights in Komodo rather than 3, so the route can move at a gentler pace

What the crew does

Indonesian captains know their waters well and will wait for a calmer window, change the order of stops or choose a more sheltered anchorage. Because the charter is private, there is no fixed schedule forcing a rough crossing. Sleeping at anchor is generally very still, which is what most guests remember.

Best months for calm water

Season matters more than anything else. Komodo is best from April to November, with the peak from May to October. Raja Ampat is best from October to April, when its sheltered waters are usually at their calmest. If you or a family member are prone to seasickness, choose the right season for the region, book a larger yacht, and pick a 5 night Komodo route or a 7 night Raja Ampat route so that each day has less sailing.

Are Komodo crossings rough?

Some channels can be choppy because of currents. Captains time crossings for calmer conditions, and most legs are short.
