Private Yacht vs Liveaboard in Komodo: Which Is Worth It?

Updated 29 October 2026 · Navélia Yacht Charters Indonesia

Short answer

A private yacht is worth it in Komodo when you travel as a group, a family or a couple who wants control of the schedule, because the whole boat, crew and route are yours. For a full group the gap is smaller than people think: Splendour takes 8 guests for US$2,490 per night, about US$311 per guest, and Raffles takes 14 for US$3,800, about US$271 per guest. A shared liveaboard makes more sense for solo travellers or dive focused couples on a tight budget.

What is the real difference?

A liveaboard sells individual berths on a fixed dive schedule, so you share the boat with strangers and follow the plan set for the group. On a private charter you book the entire yacht, and the captain builds the days around you: dive, snorkel, hike, sleep in, or move anchorage for a quieter sunset.

When is a private yacht the better value?

Value depends on how many beds you fill. A family of five on a small classic phinisi at US$1,900 per night pays about US$380 per guest, with the whole crew and chef to themselves. Eight friends on Splendour pay about US$311 each. At those numbers, a private yacht is often close to what you would spend on separate berths, with far more freedom.

If you are a solo traveller, the maths reverses, and a cabin charter or a shared liveaboard is the sensible route.

What about divers?

Private yachts can run a full dive programme in Komodo, with dive guides and equipment charged separately. The difference is that you dive at times that suit your group, and non divers in your party can snorkel, paddle or visit beaches instead of waiting. For a dive led trip, ask for a yacht with a dedicated dive setup and choose your season with currents in mind.

Komodo's best dive sites are shaped by strong tidal currents. On a private yacht your dive guide can choose the right moment for each site and add a second attempt if conditions were not right the first time, which a fixed liveaboard schedule rarely allows.

Costs to add on top

  • Komodo park fees, roughly US$50 to 120 per guest for 3 to 4 nights, more for divers
  • Diving guides and equipment
  • Alcohol
  • Crew gratuity, usually about 10% of the charter fee

Our honest recommendation

If you are a group of four or more, a family, or a couple celebrating something, choose a private yacht: the cost per guest is reasonable and the experience is entirely yours. If you are travelling alone or as a couple and the main goal is as many dives as possible for the lowest price, a shared liveaboard or a cabin charter is the sensible choice. Either way, aim for 5 nights in Komodo between April and November.

Questions
