Raja Ampat Yacht Charter for Non Divers: Is It Worth It?

Updated 29 October 2026 · Navélia Yacht Charters Indonesia

Short answer

Yes, Raja Ampat is one of the best places in Indonesia for non divers, because much of its reef life sits in shallow water you can see with a mask and snorkel, and the karst islands, lagoons and viewpoints are spectacular above water. On a private yacht the captain plans each day around snorkelling, kayaking and hikes, with yachts from US$4,450 per night such as Anne Bonny. Plan 5 to 7 nights from Sorong, between October and April.

What do non divers actually do in Raja Ampat?

Many of the reefs that divers talk about start in a metre or two of water. Mangrove edges, coral gardens around small islands and sandy channels are easy snorkelling, and a good crew will take you to the shallow side of a site while any divers in your group go deeper.

  • Snorkel shallow coral gardens and mangrove edges straight from the tender
  • Climb viewpoints over the karst islands, such as Piaynemo in the Fam Islands
  • Kayak or paddleboard through lagoons and between limestone islets
  • Visit villages and look for birds of paradise on a guided early morning walk
  • Swim at white sand beaches that you will often have to yourselves

Why a private yacht suits non divers

On a dive focused liveaboard, non divers often wait on board between dives. On a private charter the day is yours, so the crew can schedule a snorkel at the best tide, a hike in the cool morning and a lazy afternoon at anchor. Mixed groups work well: divers go out with a guide while the rest snorkel nearby.

Snorkelling here is genuinely world class. Many guests see turtles, reef sharks in the shallows, schools of fish and huge coral fans without ever putting on a tank. The crew will brief you on currents and keep a tender close by at every stop.

Which yachts and what budget?

Prices are for the whole yacht per night, with crew, meals and fuel for the standard route included.

How long and when to go

Raja Ampat charters depart from Sorong, and 5 to 7 nights is typical. Adding Misool in the south or Wayag in the north takes 7 to 10 nights. The best period is October to April, when seas are generally calmest. Budget for the Raja Ampat entry permit of about US$120 per guest, plus alcohol and a crew gratuity of about 10% of the charter fee. Non divers save the cost of diving entirely.

Tips for non divers

  • Bring a well fitting mask and a rash guard for sun protection while snorkelling
  • Ask the crew for a guide on every snorkel so they can point out wildlife
  • Plan early mornings for viewpoints and birdwatching, when it is cooler
  • Try a discovery dive with an instructor if you are curious, arranged as an extra
  • Arrive in Sorong the day before your charter to avoid missing departure
