How to Fly to Sorong for a Raja Ampat Yacht Charter

Updated 29 October 2026 · Navélia Yacht Charters Indonesia

Short answer

Raja Ampat yacht charters start in Sorong, West Papua, which you reach on a domestic flight, most often connecting through Jakarta, Makassar or Manado. From Bali the usual route is one connection via Makassar, and most travellers allow a full day of travel. We recommend arriving in Sorong the day before your charter, or on an early morning flight, so a delay never costs you a night on the yacht.

Which routes reach Sorong?

Sorong is served by Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ). International visitors usually arrive first in Jakarta or Bali and then take a domestic flight with one connection. Schedules and airlines change through the year, so we check current options with you when you book.

  • From Bali: connect through Makassar, which is the most common route
  • From Jakarta: direct or one stop flights, often overnight
  • From Manado: an option if you combine Raja Ampat with North Sulawesi
  • From Singapore and other hubs: fly to Jakarta or Bali first, then connect

When should you arrive?

Domestic flights in eastern Indonesia can run late, and some routes operate only a few times a day. Arriving the day before your embarkation is the safest plan. Sorong has simple hotels for one night, and your yacht team can advise where to stay and arrange transfers. If you fly in on the morning of departure, choose the earliest arrival and keep the afternoon free.

If you are coming from Europe or the Americas, many guests spend one or two nights in Bali or Jakarta first to recover from the long haul flight before the domestic leg. That also gives you a buffer if the international flight runs late.

Baggage tips for a Raja Ampat charter

  • Check the checked baggage allowance on each domestic leg, which can be lower than on your international flight
  • Pack in soft bags that stow easily in cabins
  • Carry medication, swimwear and one change of clothes in hand luggage
  • Divers should check how dive gear is counted, or rent equipment through the yacht

What happens when you land?

Your crew or our local partner meets you in Sorong and transfers you to the harbour, where the tender takes you to the yacht. Before you set off, make sure the Raja Ampat entry permit of about US$120 per guest is arranged. Charters of 5 to 7 nights are typical, and 7 to 10 nights let you reach Misool or Wayag. The best season is October to April. Raja Ampat is a separate trip from Komodo; we do not sail between the two regions.

Planning the return flight

Charters usually end in the morning in Sorong. Book your onward domestic flight for late morning or afternoon, and avoid tight same day connections to an international flight. If you have been diving, check the recommended time between your last dive and flying, and let the crew plan your final dive accordingly. Our team will share transfer details and timings once your charter is confirmed.
