Five honest ways to lower the cost

• Fill the boat: a large, simple yacht shared by friends is the lowest per guest price, as Augustine and Raffles show
• Choose a smaller classic phinisi rather than a luxury yacht; the islands and reefs are the same
• Travel in the shoulder months of April, May, June, September, October or November, when you have more choice of yachts
• Book 3 or 4 nights instead of 7; 3 nights is the minimum we recommend
• Skip diving if not everyone dives, and snorkel instead

What you give up on a budget yacht

Smaller and older phinisi have simpler cabins, smaller bathrooms, less deck space and a smaller crew. Some cabins may be fan cooled at times or share facilities, so read the yacht page carefully. What you keep is the most important part: a private boat, your own route, a captain who knows the park, and home cooked Indonesian food.

Smaller yachts also have more limited deck space for sunbathing and dining, and fewer water toys. For most groups on a budget, that trade is worth it. The difference you feel most is space, not the quality of the trip.

Sample budget for 5 nights

Splendour for 8 friends over 5 nights costs US$12,450 for the yacht, about US$1,556 per guest. Add Komodo park fees of roughly US$50 to 120 per guest for a 3 to 4 night trip (slightly more for 5 nights and for divers), drinks, and a crew gratuity of about 10% of the charter fee. We work at direct owner rates with no broker fees, so the yacht price is the owner's rate.

Where saving money does not make sense

We do not recommend cutting below 3 nights, because the first and last days include boarding and disembarking in Labuan Bajo. We also advise against booking an unsuitable yacht to save money if your group includes very young children or anyone with limited mobility.
