Introduction
When researching a luxury yacht charter in Indonesia, the first frustrating discovery is that quoted prices vary tenfold for boats that look broadly similar in photographs. This guide explains why — and how to read a quote so you can compare apples to apples.
The Five Phinisi Tiers
The market sorts roughly into five tiers, each with predictable price brackets and feature sets:
- Entry boutique (25–30m, 6–8 guests): $1.900–$3.000/night. Basic crew, simple meals, limited water sports.
- Mid boutique (30–35m, 8–10 guests): $3.000–$4.500/night. Better cabin finishes, dedicated chef, dive-ready tenders.
- Premium phinisi (40–50m, 10–14 guests): $4.500–$8.000/night. Spa, full dive operation, multi-course tasting menus, multiple tenders.
- Top-tier phinisi (50–60m, 12–14 guests): $8.000–$15.000/night. Owner-suite layouts, dive instructor, sommelier, dual tenders, full water-toy fleet.
- Superyacht-class phinisi (55m+, 12–16 guests): $15.000–$25.000+/night. Helipad capability, on-board cinema, spa staff, formal sommelier programme. See our superyacht charter guide.
What's Actually Included in the Nightly Rate
A standard inclusive Indonesian phinisi charter rate covers:
- Yacht use and full professional crew (captain, deckhands, chef, hospitality, dive guide on dive yachts)
- Fuel for the cruising route (within reasonable limits — see relocation fees below)
- All meals — breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, afternoon tea
- Soft drinks, water, juices, coffee, tea
- Standard water sports (paddleboards, kayaks, snorkelling gear, fishing tackle)
- Bed linens, towels, basic toiletries
What's NOT Included (The Honest Bit)
These costs sit outside the published charter rate and add meaningfully to the total bill:
- National park fees: Komodo ~$300/guest/week, Raja Ampat ~$110/guest (annual tag). Triton Bay and other parks vary.
- Alcohol: Wine, beer, and spirits are typically extra. Some yachts bill cost-plus, others mark up substantially.
- Crew gratuity: 5–10% of the charter rate, distributed by the captain.
- Nitrox fills: $15–25 per dive on most yachts.
- Premium excursions: Helicopter transfers, private island visits, traditional dance performances.
- Relocation fees: If you embark in Sorong but disembark in Bali, the yacht may charge a one-way fee. See our breakdown of hidden surcharges.
Sample Total: A Real 7-Day Premium Phinisi Charter
For a family of 8 chartering a $5.500/night premium phinisi in Komodo for 7 nights:
- Charter base: 7 × $5.500 = $38.500
- Komodo park fees: 8 × ~$300 = $2.400
- Wine & cocktails (modest consumption): ~$1.500
- Crew gratuity (8% of charter): ~$3.080
- Premium excursions (one helicopter scenic): ~$2.000
- Total all-in: ~$47.500 = ~$5.940 per guest for the week
Why Identical-Looking Yachts Have Different Prices
Two phinisi photographed side-by-side from the air can look indistinguishable. Yet one might charter at $4.000/night and the other at $9.000. The drivers:
- Build quality. Sulawesi-built phinisi from heritage yards (Bira, Tanah Beru) cost 2–3× more to build than mass-built versions. See our phinisi craftsmanship guide.
- Crew calibre. A trained sommelier, certified dive instructor, and Michelin-trained chef triple the staffing cost.
- Tender count. Two equipped tenders vs one materially affects dive operations and guest experience.
- Maintenance budget. A well-maintained 15-year-old yacht looks 5 years old. A neglected 5-year-old yacht looks 15.
Final Thoughts
Phinisi pricing is honest if you know how to read it. The biggest savings come from choosing the right tier for your group rather than over-paying for unused features. Contact our team for a transparent quote with no hidden line items.
