Long before Komodo and Raja Ampat appeared on yacht charter maps, the Maluku Islands — the original Spice Islands — were the most sought-after destination on Earth. For centuries, nutmeg, cloves, and mace from these tiny volcanic islands drove global exploration, sparked wars, and shaped the modern world.

Today, the Maluku Islands offer Indonesia's most historically rich and least-visited yacht charter experience.

What to See & Do

Banda Neira

The jewel of Maluku. This tiny island was once the epicenter of the global nutmeg trade. Explore Fort Belgica (Dutch colonial fortress), walk through working nutmeg plantations, and dive the legendary Gunung Api lava flow — where coral has spectacularly reclaimed volcanic rock in one of the world's top-10 dive sites.

Ambon

The gateway city to Maluku. Ambon offers excellent muck diving (one of the world's best macro photography sites), Portuguese colonial churches, and vibrant local markets. Most Maluku charters start and end here.

Saparua & Outer Islands

Historic clove plantations, Dutch fortifications, and pristine reefs. Saparua's dramatic coastline and cultural heritage make it a rewarding stop between Ambon and Banda.

Sample 10-Night Itinerary

Days 1–2: Ambon — muck diving, city exploration, provisioning. Days 3–4: Saparua & Nusa Laut — clove plantations, wall diving, colonial history. Days 5–7: Banda Islands — Fort Belgica, Gunung Api dive, Hatta Island walls, nutmeg plantation tour. Days 8–9: Outer islands — pristine snorkeling, uninhabited beaches, pelagic encounters. Day 10: Return to Ambon.

Best Time to Visit

The Maluku Islands have two optimal windows: September–November and March–May. These transition periods offer calmer seas and excellent visibility. December–February brings significant rainfall; June–August can be windy.

Combining Maluku with Other Regions

  • Maluku → Raja Ampat (14+ nights): The classic Banda Sea crossing — from spice history to the world's richest reefs
  • Maluku → Triton Bay (10+ nights): Continue east from Banda to Papua's Triton Bay for whale sharks and pristine diving
  • Sulawesi → Maluku (10+ nights): From Bunaken/Togean through the Banda Sea to Ambon

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Ambon?+

Fly from Jakarta (4 hours), Makassar (2.5 hours), or Surabaya (3 hours). Ambon's Pattimura Airport receives daily flights.

Yes. Snorkeling on Banda's reefs is spectacular, and the historical/cultural content (forts, plantations, villages) provides rich experiences above water.
