The 10 Best Anchorages in Komodo National Park (Sailor-Verified Guide)

Komodo's 10 most reliable anchorages — Pink Beach, Padar South, Gili Lawa Darat, Kanawa, Sebayur, Wainilu, Manjarite, Loh Liang (Rinca), Loh Buaya, and Kelor — chosen for holding, swim safety, scenery, and tender access. The order matters: a good captain sequences anchorages to follow tides and wind, not Instagram fame.

Why Anchorage Choice Defines a Komodo Charter

Two yachts running the same Komodo charter on the same week can deliver radically different guest experiences — and 80% of that difference is anchorage selection. The right anchorage means glassy morning swims, easy tender launches, and uninterrupted sleep. The wrong one means roll, current, and an exhausted crew. This list is what our captains actually use, in priority order.

1. Pink Beach (Pantai Merah)

The benchmark anchorage for first-time guests. Sandy bottom 8–14 m, excellent holding, protected from southeast trade winds during dry season. The shore swim is iconic. Avoid in northwest monsoon (Dec–Feb). Best paired with a sunset stay before an early-morning departure to Manta Point.

2. Padar South Bay

Holding is variable (rocky patches), but the dawn anchorage below the famous Padar Island hike is unmatched. Captains drop anchor by 04:30 so guests can be on the ridge for sunrise. Tender ride is short (~3 min). Don't overnight here in strong winds — relocate to nearby Wainilu.

3. Gili Lawa Darat

Northern Komodo. Calm, scenic, deep enough for superyachts. The hike up the ridge at sunset is the visual rival of Padar. Anchor in 15–20 m sand. Tender access to the trail is straightforward. One of the best night-sky anchorages in the park.

4. Kanawa Island

Reliable, calm, sandy. House-reef snorkeling directly off the back of the yacht. Often used as the final anchorage before returning to Labuan Bajo because cell signal is reachable for guests who want to reconnect.

5. Sebayur Kecil

Underrated. Quieter than Kanawa, with similar swim quality and a gentle drift snorkel along the reef edge. A favorite for crews who want to give guests genuine privacy on a busy week.

6. Wainilu

A muck-diving site of unusual variety (frogfish, ghost pipefish, blue-ringed octopus). The anchorage is sheltered and ideal as a safety alternative when Padar South gets choppy. Worth a dedicated dawn dive even for non-macro divers.

7. Manjarite

The closest reliable anchorage to Manta Point. Use it as a pre-dawn staging point so guests can be at the cleaning station before the day-tripper boats arrive from Labuan Bajo. Holding is fine; depth 10–15 m.

8. Loh Liang (Rinca dock)

The standard anchorage for Komodo dragon walks at Rinca. Use the early shift (06:30 ranger guide) to beat the heat and crowds. Park rangers are professional; gratuity is customary.

9. Loh Buaya

Alternate dragon-watching anchorage on Rinca. Less crowded than Loh Liang and often delivers higher dragon-encounter rates because the rangers cover a wider trail loop. Worth requesting if your captain is flexible.

10. Kelor Island

The classic last anchorage before returning to Labuan Bajo. Quick hike to a stunning viewpoint, calm swim, and a short ~45-minute final leg into port. Almost every well-designed 5–7 night route ends here.

How Captains Sequence These Anchorages

A skilled captain doesn't visit anchorages in geographic order — they sequence them around tides at Manta Point and Batu Bolong, wind direction, and dragon-walk timing. On a 5-night charter you'll typically use 4–5 of the above; on 7 nights, 6–7. Browse sample itineraries for a sense of how routes flow.

Final Thoughts

These 10 anchorages cover roughly 95% of what a luxury charter actually uses in Komodo. The remaining 5% are weather-dependent backups that experienced captains keep in reserve. Talk to our team if you'd like to discuss a specific route or season — we'll match you with a captain whose anchorage knowledge fits your priorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many anchorages will we visit on a 5-night Komodo charter?+

Typically 4–5 anchorages across 5 nights. Each is chosen to align with the next morning's activity (dive site, dragon walk, sunrise hike) rather than just for proximity.

Can we request specific anchorages?+

Yes. Share your priorities (diving, hiking, photography, privacy) at booking and the captain will pre-design the route. Mid-charter changes are possible for weather or guest preference.

Are there anchorages that get crowded?+

Pink Beach, Padar South, and Manta Point can have multiple boats during July–August peak. Captains avoid this by arriving at off-peak hours (dawn or late afternoon) when most day-trippers have left.

Is overnight anchorage safe in Komodo?+

Yes — at the well-known anchorages above. Holding is good in sand at 8–20 m, and the park is well patrolled. Crews always set anchor watch overnight on luxury charters.
