Why November Is the Insider's Month
Most divers focus on December–February for Raja Ampat. November sits a step earlier in the calendar and rewards anyone who books early: similar conditions, fewer boats at marquee sites, and meaningful price flexibility on yachts. If you're planning a Raja Ampat yacht charter, November deserves serious consideration.
November Conditions at a Glance
- Air temperature: 27–32°C, generally sunny with brief afternoon showers.
- Water temperature: 28–29°C — boardshort comfort for most, 3 mm wetsuit for repetitive diving.
- Visibility: 20–30 m at most sites. Some sheltered bays still hold the rainier-month plankton.
- Wind: Light variable, transitioning toward the northwest monsoon. Sea state mostly flat.
- Rain: Short tropical showers, usually overnight or late afternoon. Diving rarely affected.
What Marine Life November Delivers
The plankton-rich currents that fueled October's productivity are now feeding the early-season manta aggregations. Reef shark activity is consistent at signature sites. Bumphead parrotfish schools begin returning to Cape Kri. Macro life — pygmy seahorses, walking sharks, ghost pipefish — remains present year-round but is easier to spot in calmer water.
Six Lesser-Known November Dive Sites
1. Eagle Rock (Penemu)
A pinnacle near the famous Penemu viewpoint. Currents bring schooling fusiliers and trevally. Manta passes possible. Skip if currents exceed 1.5 knots — November conditions usually keep it manageable.
2. Mike's Point
Near Cape Kri but consistently overlooked. Reef wall to 30 m, healthy soft corals, and excellent macro on the slope. The November visibility makes the wall photography exceptional.
3. Magic Mountain (Misool)
A southern dive that opens up reliably in November as the southeast monsoon collapses. Two pinnacles, manta cleaning station, and serious pelagic potential. One of the most rewarding sites in Indonesia for advanced divers.
4. Boo Windows (Misool)
Famous topside, underrated below. Two natural arches with light shafts. November's high visibility makes the photography spectacular. Pair with a sunset deck shoot from the yacht.
5. Citrus Ridge
Central Raja Ampat ridge dive named for its vivid orange soft corals. Currents bring sharks and schooling jacks. Reliable November site with light to moderate current most days.
6. Sardine Reef
Massive bait-ball action when conditions align — and November is one of the more reliable windows. Best dived early morning before the current accelerates.
Suggested 7-Night November Route
Sorong → Dampier Strait (Cape Kri, Sardine, Mike's Point) → Penemu (Eagle Rock, sunset hike) → Aljui Bay (pearl farm and night dives) → southern Misool (Magic Mountain, Boo Windows) → return via Citrus Ridge → Sorong.
