Raja Ampat sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle, in the corner of the ocean where marine biodiversity peaks. The archipelago holds roughly three quarters of the world's known hard coral species, and Dr Gerald Allen's 2012 fish count at Cape Kri recorded 374 species in a single dive — a figure that still stands as the world record.

What that means underwater is density rather than rarity. Reefs here are not fragile remnants; they are crowded, layered and loud with fish, from the resident schools of the Dampier Strait to the soft-coral walls of Misool in the south.

Navélia arranges private whole-boat dive charters across Raja Ampat from Sorong in West Papua. The entire vessel and crew are yours, the route is built around your group, and the dive operation — compressors, guiding, rental equipment — is configured per booking.

Ask A Question

What the dive side of your charter includes

You charter the whole vessel, so the dive operation belongs to your group alone. Here is what that means in practice.

Onboard compressors, nitrox on selected vessels

Tanks are filled aboard so dives are never rationed by a shore schedule. Nitrox is available on selected vessels — we confirm which ones when we shortlist for your dates.

Certified divemaster or instructor aboard

A certified divemaster or instructor can be placed aboard as part of the charter, so the guiding is yours alone rather than shared with strangers.

Full rental equipment supplied

BCDs, regulators, wetsuits and dive computers are supplied on request. You can fly in with nothing but a mask and a certification card.

Tailored to your group, every time

Every dive charter is built per booking: guiding, equipment and route are matched to the vessel and to the certification level of the people aboard.

Signature dive sites

Raja Ampat divides into three broad dive regions: the Dampier Strait in the centre, Misool in the south and the Wayag and Fam islands in the north. They are genuinely far apart, and which ones you reach is a direct function of how many nights you charter.

Dampier Strait

Cape Kri

Intermediate

The site that set the world record for fish species counted on one dive. A ridge off Kri island where schooling jacks, barracuda, sweetlips and reef sharks stack up along the current line.

Blue Magic

Intermediate

A submerged seamount that draws wobbegongs, grey reef sharks and, in season, oceanic mantas cruising the cleaning stations on the crown.

Sardine Reef

Intermediate

A small reef that punches far above its size — dense baitfish clouds with trevally and mackerel hunting straight through them.

Mioskon

All levels

A sloping reef off a bat-roosting island, reliable for wobbegong sharks resting under table coral and excellent as a dusk or night dive.

Chicken Reef

Intermediate

A compact ridge that concentrates schooling fish when the current runs, with sharks patrolling the deeper end.

Manta Sandy

All levels

A shallow sand channel with designated cleaning stations. Divers kneel behind a marker line while reef mantas queue overhead — the most dependable manta encounter in the archipelago.

Arborek Jetty

All levels

A jetty draped in soft coral with schooling batfish and a resident macro population. Superb for photography and an easy checkout or last dive.

Fam Islands

Melissa's Garden

All levels

Shallow, sunlit hard-coral gardens in some of the clearest water in Raja Ampat. The site people picture when they picture Coral Triangle reef health.

Misool

Magic Mountain

Advanced

A seamount off southern Misool with two peaks and oceanic manta cleaning stations. Current can be strong, and the pelagic traffic is the reason to be there.

Boo Windows

Intermediate

Two swim-through openings in a limestone ridge, framed by soft coral and backlit by blue water. Reef fish density here is extraordinary.

Four Kings

Advanced

Four pinnacles in open water, coated in fans and soft coral, with sharks and schooling fish working the channels between them. Exposed and current-dependent.

Nudi Rock

Intermediate

A rock shaped like a nudibranch, and living up to it — dense soft coral, fans and outstanding macro life alongside passing pelagics.

North Raja Ampat

Wayag

Intermediate

The iconic karst lagoon. Reefs here are less dived than the Dampier Strait, and the topside landscape is the reason many groups add the northern leg.

When to dive Raja Ampat

October to April is the prime window across Raja Ampat, with the Dampier Strait manta aggregation running roughly December to March. June to September favours Misool in the south, when conditions there settle.

  • Water sits at 27–30°C year-round; a 3mm wetsuit is usually enough, though repetitive deep days justify a 5mm.
  • Oceanic mantas at Magic Mountain and reef mantas at Manta Sandy are seasonal peaks, not guarantees — a private route lets the crew chase the reports.
  • The northern Wayag and Fam leg needs longer charters; seven nights and upward is realistic if you want it done properly.
  • December to March is the tightest window for availability. Six to nine months' notice is normal for those dates.

Conditions, currents and certification

Raja Ampat is, overall, milder than Komodo. There is no equivalent of Batu Bolong's down-current wall, and many of the signature sites can be dived comfortably by confident open-water divers.

That said, the Dampier Strait moves. Cape Kri, Blue Magic, Sardine Reef and Chicken Reef all fish best when water is running, and a reef hook earns its place in the pocket. Magic Mountain and Four Kings in Misool are exposed sites and are properly advanced dives.

Water is warm and stable, 27–30°C across the year, so a 3mm suit is usually enough. Visibility is generally strong from October onward and can be exceptional around the Fam islands.

  • Confident Open Water divers upward are well served; the harder sites are reserved for Advanced.
  • Reef hooks are useful in the Dampier Strait and supplied on request.
  • Mixed-ability groups work well — your own divemaster splits the plan instead of levelling it down.
  • Nitrox is available on selected vessels and is worth requesting for five or more diving days.

Why distance makes a private charter the right format here

Raja Ampat is vast. Sorong to the Dampier Strait is a night's steam; the Dampier Strait to Misool is most of a day; Wayag in the far north is further still. A fixed route has to commit to those legs before anyone boards, which is why so many published itineraries feel like a compromise between regions.

Chartering the whole vessel turns the distance into an advantage. If the mantas are reported at Blue Magic, you stay another day. If the Dampier Strait is busy, you steam south to Misool overnight and dive Boo Windows in the morning. The five-night minimum exists for exactly this reason — below it, the archipelago is too big to do justice to.

  • Route decided day by day on current dive reports, not months in advance.
  • Overnight steams timed so you wake at the next site rather than losing dive time.
  • Up to four dives a day, including night dives at Arborek Jetty and Mioskon.
  • Non-divers get Wayag viewpoints, Piaynemo, birding for birds of paradise and village visits.
  • A certified divemaster or instructor placed aboard for your group alone.

What a private Raja Ampat dive charter costs

Private whole-vessel dive charters in Raja Ampat start from USD 15,000, with a five-night minimum. The rate is for the entire yacht and crew — it does not change with the number of divers aboard, up to the vessel's guest capacity.

Raja Ampat prices above Komodo for a reason: the archipelago is remoter, provisioning runs through Sorong, and the distances mean more fuel and longer steams. Vessel class and season move the figure from there, with December to March at the top of the range.

Diving is normally quoted as a package alongside the charter, and the Raja Ampat marine park entry permit is paid locally. Both are set out in writing before you commit — direct owner pricing, no broker fees.

Not ready to charter a whole yacht? Join a cabin charter instead

On a cabin charter you book individual cabins on a shared departure rather than the whole vessel. It costs far less per person, and it is the honest option when a private charter is out of reach for now.

The trade-off is real: the itinerary and dates are fixed, the dive schedule is set for everyone aboard, and you share the vessel with other guests. If that suits you, it works beautifully. If you want the schedule to bend around your group, charter privately.
